Frequently Asked Questions

Is NOSA part of CTI?

NOSA became part of CTI in 2025. The relationship supports NOSA’s wider capabilities and international connections.

Is NOSA the same organisation previously branded as SafetyCloud?

The business adopted the SafetyCloud brand in 2021 and is consolidating its identity under the NOSA name. NOSA’s heritage dates back to 1951.

How long has NOSA been operating?

NOSA was established in 1951 and has a long history in occupational health and safety. Its Five Star audit heritage dates to 1954 and SAMTRAC to 1964.

What services does NOSA provide beyond training?

In addition to occupational health and safety training, NOSA provides auditing, consulting, certification and occupational hygiene services.

Does an incident investigation replace mandatory reporting to authorities?

No. Where an incident is reportable, the relevant legal notification and investigation obligations still apply. Requirements depend on the incident and legislation, so obtain advice promptly.

Can NOSA help after a health and safety incident?

NOSA offers consulting and incident-related health and safety support. Contact the team promptly to discuss your circumstances; statutory reporting and scene-preservation duties remain the responsibility of the relevant duty holders.

Have South African occupational hygiene regulations changed?

South Africa introduced changes in 2026 affecting areas previously covered by the Environmental Regulations for Workplaces and Noise-Induced Hearing Loss Regulations. Organisations should confirm which requirements apply to their activities and obtain appropriate specialist advice.

Is an occupational hygiene survey enough to demonstrate legal compliance?

Not necessarily. A survey report alone does not establish full compliance. Depending on the applicable requirements, an organisation may also need risk assessments, monitoring, controls, health surveillance, records and training.

What does NOSA occupational hygiene cover?

Occupational hygiene services help organisations assess exposures to health hazards such as noise, physical agents and environmental conditions. The scope of any assessment depends on the risks and applicable requirements.

Can NOSA help identify health and safety risks?

NOSA provides consulting and occupational hygiene services that can support organisations in understanding and managing health and safety risks. The appropriate service depends on the hazards and requirements involved.

What is ISO 45001?

ISO 45001 is an international standard setting requirements for occupational health and safety management systems. It is not the same as completing an individual health and safety training course.

Does NOSA offer ISO-related services?

NOSA provides services across auditing, consulting and certification. ISO-related training and services should be checked individually, as attending an ISO course, having an audit and obtaining management-system certification are different activities.

Does a Five Star audit replace our legal health and safety obligations?

No. An audit can help an organisation evaluate its systems and performance, but it does not remove the organisation’s responsibility to meet applicable legal requirements.

How often should an organisation have a Five Star audit?

NOSA has indicated that Five Star audits are generally conducted annually. The appropriate schedule for your organisation should be discussed with the NOSA auditing team.

Is a NOSA Five Star audit the same as ISO 45001 certification?

No. A NOSA Five Star audit and ISO 45001 certification serve different purposes. Five Star assesses performance through NOSA’s audit framework, while ISO 45001 certification assesses a management system against the requirements of the ISO 45001 standard through the relevant certification process.
