Frequently Asked Questions

Can NOSA assist nationwide?

Yes. NOSA provides occupational hygiene, compliance and risk management services throughout South Africa.

How often must assessments be conducted?

Risk assessments should be reviewed periodically and whenever workplace conditions change. Organisations should maintain an ongoing compliance programme rather than treating compliance as a once-off exercise.

What assessments are required?

The specific assessments required depend on the workplace and the exposure risks identified. Employers are generally expected to identify hazards, conduct risk assessments and perform exposure monitoring where necessary.

Do the regulations apply to office environments?

Yes. The regulations are not limited to industrial workplaces. Lighting, thermal comfort and indoor environmental conditions may also fall within the scope of the regulations.

When is the compliance deadline?

Full compliance is required by 6 September 2026.

What are the Physical Agents Regulations?

The Physical Agents Regulations are workplace health and safety regulations issued under the Occupational Health and Safety Act. They establish requirements for managing employee exposure to workplace environmental hazards such as noise, vibration, thermal stress, lighting and radiation.

What industries hire the most safety officers in South Africa?

The mining industry is the largest employer, followed by construction, manufacturing, petrochemical, logistics, and healthcare.

Is there demand for safety officers in South Africa in 2026?

Yes, demand remains strong especially in mining, construction, manufacturing, and logistics sectors.

Can I study SAMTRAC online?

Yes, SafetyCloud offers SAMTRAC training through flexible online learning, classroom-based training at 15 NOSA Colleges, or hybrid options.

What is the difference between a safety officer and a safety representative?

A safety officer develops and implements safety policies, while a safety representative is elected by workers to represent their safety concerns.

How much does SAMTRAC training cost in South Africa?

SAMTRAC training costs vary. Contact SafetyCloud for current pricing and available payment plans.

Do I need a degree to become a safety officer?

No, you don’t need a university degree. A Matric certificate and SAMTRAC certification are the minimum requirements.

How long does it take to become a qualified safety officer in South Africa?

It typically takes 6 months to 1 year, depending on how you progress through foundational safety courses, SAMTRAC training, and practical experience.
